The Cabin Air Filter: What It Does
The cabin air filter in your vehicle works similar to the filter in your home air conditioning system. It filters out dust and debris in the air to help you breathe cleaner air. As the filter get clogged, it will reduce the amount of air flow that’s coming through the vents. The AC may not blow out cold air as strongly, which will keep the cabin from feeling as cool in hot weather. A clogged air filter allows more dust on the surfaces inside the cabin and may cause a musty smell.
If you notice any of these symptoms, you should bring your vehicle in for service at ALM Chevrolet South. Even if you don’t notice any issues with your cabin air filter, it should be replaced on a regular basis. Most vehicles need the filter changed every 15-30,000 miles. Your owner’s manual will tell you the recommendations for your model.
The Engine Air Filter: What It Does
The second air filter in your vehicle is for the engine. The filter cleans air that goes into the engine to keep out dust, dirt, and various other contaminants. The air mixes with fuel to ignite and creates a combustion that starts the engine. The filter may be round, flat, or cone-shaped. You can find this filter under the hood, usually on top or alongside the engine in a plastic box.
The engine air filter should be replaced about every 12-15,000 miles, but you can check the owner’s manual for recommendations for your model. If you don’t remember when the filter was last changed, you may notice certain signs that indicate it’s time for a new filter.
-
A dirty filter can cause reduced performance because not enough air gets to the combustion chamber.
-
Your vehicle may take longer to accelerate to the desired speed, or it may jerk when you press on the gas pedal.
-
If you can access the filter, you may notice that it’s gray and dirty. A clean filter will be white and transparent.
A dirty engine filter will limit performance and cause the engine to work harder, which can reduce the life of the engine or result in more repairs down the road.
