What Oil Does
The oil in your vehicle has a very important role. It moves through the engine, lubricating the moving components to help everything run more smoothly and with less friction. When you reduce friction, it helps the parts last longer. Oil also moves any debris or grime out of the engine to prevent it from damaging the system. Another purpose for oil is that it helps keep the engine from overheating because it doesn’t have to work as hard. With all those important jobs, it’s no wonder that oil gets dirty and needs to be replaced.
How Often to Schedule an Oil Change
When you change the oil, the filter is also replaced. The filter traps dust and dirt to keep it from getting to the motor. When the filter gets full, it prevents the oil from moving freely. Older vehicles require an oil change about every 3000 miles if they are using traditional oil, which is made of crude oil and additives. Newer models use synthetic oil, which is a man-made product and designed to do a better job. With synthetic oil, you only need to change your oil about every 5000-7000 miles or according to your owner’s manual. Some models can even last up to 10,000 miles between oil changes. If you’re not sure how often to get an oil change, you can talk to the Service Center at ALM Chevrolet South.
Signs You Need an Oil Change
If you go too long without having the oil changed on your vehicle, it will let you know that it needs one. Some signs to watch for include:
- Engine runs rough, which means the oil isn’t doing it’s job properly.
- Engine runs hot, which means it has to work harder because it’s not being lubricated properly.
- The dashboard light to indicate an oil change is needed comes on.
- When you check your oil and it’s dark brown on the dipstick, it means the oil is dirty. Clean oil is a light brown and transparent.
- You start to hear grinding noises, which means you need to check your oil level immediately.
- You notice an oil leak under the vehicle or oil on other components of the vehicle.
